Getting Started
I mediate family law and probate matters for people living anywhere in Washington State through secure video conferencing using Zoom. I facilitate joint sessions and utilize private virtual meeting rooms so we may discuss matters privately as needed, just as we would at an office.
What to Expect
Mediation is an alternative to litigation – a less expensive, less adversarial, and more sustainable way to resolve legal conflicts. Here’s how I work with my clients:
Step One
Because I’m a neutral party, you’ll go through an initial screening process with my staff at Deno Millikan first to avoid any conflicts of interest. Then, if we move forward, I will schedule an introductory meeting so everyone can informally explain their opinions about the dispute. And, each party will complete written intake forms to provide detailed information relevant to the conflict.

Step Two
Next, I’ll meet with the parties separately to discuss the dispute privately; this can be a very important step. Emotions run high in family law cases! You need to be heard without interruption and without power struggles over the narrative.
Step Three
Then, joint sessions will begin so we can start exploring priorities and possible solutions. We use a contract that outlines expectations and processes so that everyone has a guiding framework to stay on track. Sessions typically happen every other week but could be less or more frequent depending on the issues. I share written session notes to help each party keep track of progress and next steps. Throughout, I am careful to maintain an emotionally, socially, and physically safe environment for everyone involved.
Step Four
Once a verbal agreement is reached, a written agreement will be drafted, reviewed by each person’s attorney, and signed by all the involved parties.
A Quick Caveat:
Although I am an attorney, and my experience as a litigator informs my process, I don’t give legal advice during mediation.
My clients have described me as a coach, a facilitator, an idea generator, a host, and a referee. If needed, I can refer you to parenting experts, financial advisors, or other relevant professionals or resources along the way.
